Funeral Mass will be held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church 7424 Mimosa Ave, El Paso TX 79915 on Wednesday, July 22, 2026 at 11:00am.

Cemetery burial will be held at Ft Bliss National Cemetery with Military and El Paso Police Department Honors at 1:00pm (following Mass) Pallbearers

Juan Ignacio Ponce


It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Juan Ignacio Ponce, beloved husband, father, father-in-law, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and brother who departed this life and called to his eternal resting place on July 7, 2026, at the age of 92. He was born on May 26, 1934, in Delicias, Chihuahua, Mexico to Ignacio Ponce and Paula Lopez, and lived a life marked by kindness, dedication, and quiet strength.

Juan spent his early years in Chihuahua, where he developed the values that would guide him throughout life: faith, hard work, generosity, and devotion to family. In 1958 and was drafted and served for 10 years in the US Army during the Korean and Vietnam War. He received an honorable discharged as a Staff Sergeant, E-6 in 1968. He later built a career in the El Paso Police Department where he was respected and served for 33 years. He was revered for his professionalism, kindness, warm spirit and his willingness to lend a hand.

In July of 1958, Juan I. Ponce married Maria Teresa Sandoval, and together they shared 68 years of love, partnership, and cherished memories. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandparent and even prouder great grandparent, treasured sibling, and loyal friend. Providing for his family was always at the center of his life, and he found joy in the accomplishments, laughter, and company of those he loved most.

Juan I. Ponce enjoyed his passion for singing and could often be found singing in the church choir or anywhere he could flaunt his amazing talent. He had a gift for making others feel welcome and valued, and his presence brought comfort and light to many. Whether through acts of service, words of encouragement, or simply a listening ear, he touched countless lives in ways that will not be forgotten.

His memories and love will be continued and cherished by his wife, Maria T. Ponce, son, Juan A. Ponce with wife, Margarita, son, Mario A. Ponce with wife Eva, son, Javier A. Ponce with wife Rose, daughter, Maria Ponce Vasquez with husband, Leo, granddaughters Ana Isabel Ponce McKinney, Sandra Gomez, Danielle Smith, Perla Alanís Ponce, Hector Ruvalcaba Ponce, Noemí Ponce, Naya Ponce, Halia Ponce, Christine Ponce-Diaz, Leah Vasquez, grandsons, Johnathan Ponce, Stewart Ponce, great grandchildren, Liliana Ponce, Ethan Hermosillo, Jacob Gomez, Andrew Smith, Alex Smith, Aiden Smith, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son Edgar Ponce and grandson John Alexander Vasquez.

Viewing will be held at San Jose Funeral Home 10950 Pellicano Dr. El Paso, TX 79935 on Tuesday, July 21,2026. Family Private hour: 3:00pm – 4:00pm, Public Visitation: 4pm – 8pm
