Donald Hazen Andrews Obituary
Donald “Don” Hazen Andrews, 92, of El Paso, TX, passed away on Saturday, July 11, 2026. He was born on June 13, 1934, in Omaha, Nebraska to Franklin and Jessie Andrews as the youngest of three siblings.
Don grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. After graduating from Tech High School, where Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Gibson was a classmate, Don served as an auditor in the US Army. After his service, Don attended the University of Omaha (now University of Nebraska Omaha) where he earned a degree in business. A fraternity brother, Roy Park, introduced Don to his big sister Lee and on September 17, 1958, the two were married. Making their home in Omaha, Don owned a number of businesses including Andrews Bike Center, one of the largest Schwinn dealers in the Midwest.
In 1968, Don had a major life change when he sold his businesses and moved the family to enroll in McCormick Theological Seminary. After serving as a student pastor, Don was formally ordained a minister at the First United Presbyterian Church of Braidwood (IL) on January 9, 1972. In 1974, Don moved to become minister at the First United Presbyterian Church of Farmington (IL). During his time in Farmington Don earned his Doctoral degree in ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary earning the title of Reverend Doctor. Subsequently, Don and his wife moved to El Paso, Texas where he served multiple area churches in full and part-time roles including Pebble Hills Presbyterian Church; Santa Teresa Presbyterian Church; Grace Presbyterian Church; and University Presbyterian Church.
Additionally, Don served in a number of capacities outside the church. From 1979 to 1981 he served as the President of the Board of Directors, Kemmerer Village in Assumption, IL – a Presbyterian Child Care Agency. From 1975 to 1980 he served in the Department of Mission, including leading a mission study to Colombia, South America. During his time in El Paso, Don was especially committed to prison ministry activities.
Don’s work history begins in 1951 at Hall Animal Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, so it is no surprise dogs became a staple of the family with at least one four-legged child part of the household throughout his life.
Don is survived by his three children: Lynn (Syd) Grosclaude of Lake Villa, IL;
Scott (Michelle) Andrews of Bettendorf, IA; and David (Janet) Andrews, of Gurnee, IL; ten
grandchildren: Christopher (Caitlin) Ptasienski, Joshua Ptasienski, Zachary (Jolissa)
Ptasienski, and Gabriel (Sarah) Ptasienski; Matthew Andrews, Sarah (Jonathan) Grennier, and Jonathan Andrews; and Danielle (Bryan) Sill, Jeremy Andrews, and Melinda Andrews; five great
grandchildren; plus numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Additionally, his beloved four-legged companion of nearly 10 years, April, has found a new home in El Paso.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Franklin and Jessie Andrews; his brothers Ben and Herbert; and his wife of 65 years, Lee. Don was a member of University Presbyterian Church of El Paso, TX. Cremation rites will be accorded and ashes scattered at a later date. A celebration of life service will be held on a date to be announced at University Presbyterian Church of
El Paso, Texas (upcelp.org), with a reception to follow. The celebration will be livestreamed for
those unable to attend in person.
In lieu of flowers, we ask those who wish to honor and remember Don, please consider donations to charities and causes which were closest to his heart: the church;
and pets – especially dogs.
