In Loving Memory of Marthell Arnsworth
August 4, 1960 – September 27, 2025
Marthell Arnsworth, a beloved son, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2025. He was 65 years old.
Born on August 4, 1960, in El Paso, Texas, Marthell was the cherished son of the late Ella Jean Hayward and Joseph Arnsworth. He was lovingly raised in Central El Paso by his devoted mother, his grandmother Robbie Mae Maxwell, and his step-grandfather Alfonso “Daddy Bob” Maxwell, whose influence remained a guiding force throughout his life.
Marthell’s early years were rooted in faith and community. He attended Visitors Chapel A.M.E. Church as a child and was educated in El Paso’s public schools, beginning at Alta Vista Elementary, later transferring to Houston Elementary, and eventually attending Stephen F. Austin High School — a place he held dear throughout his life. While at Austin, Marthell was a dedicated student-athlete who excelled in both football and track. He graduated from the Class of 1978 and continued his education at The University of Texas at El Paso.
Marthell’s professional journey included service at the West Texas Children’s Home in Pyote, Texas, where he contributed to the lives of many youths with his calm presence and compassionate spirit. He later worked for FDF Oil Company in Kermit, Texas, where he remained until his retirement in 2011. After retirement, he relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and most recently resided in Atlanta, Georgia.
Marthell was known for his quiet strength, gentle soul, and ever-present smile. Though he was a man of few words, when he spoke, his words carried weight, purpose, and sincerity. He was loyal and steadfast — a lifelong friend, a committed family man, and a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., where his bonds with his fraternity brothers were enduring and deeply meaningful.
Marthell was preceded in death by his mother, Ella Jean Hayward, grandmother Robbie Mae Maxwell, grandfather George Hayward, step-grandfather Alfonso “Daddy Bob” Maxwell, brother Regan Lumpkin, and sister Theresa Bishop.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion through his son, Brandon Arnsworth, and granddaughter, Alaina Richelle.
He is also survived by his siblings Calvin “PJ” Hayward and Johnny Arnsworth; uncle Dr. Willis Maxwell; nephew Justin Arnsworth and wife Zoila, along with their children Ella Monet, Jack Dillon, Maya Jean, and John Louis Arnsworth; and his longtime partner Sylvia Turner-McGhee of Atlanta, Georgia; and a host of extended family, cousins, lifelong friends, and his beloved fraternity brothers.
Marthell’s presence in our lives was a gift — his friendship, a commitment to life. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know and love him.
Until we meet again, may you rest in peace. You are now at home.
