Avelino Jose Torres Jr.

Avelino Torres was born on February 27, 1941, in Manhattan, New York, to Angela Torres of Caibarién, Cuba, and Avelino Torres Miranda of Aguada, Puerto Rico.

Along with his brother Mike, he spent part of his childhood at St. Agnes Catholic Home for Boys in Sparkill, New York, where he strengthened the deep Catholic faith that would remain with him throughout his life. He graduated from Colegio San Carlos in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, in 1963. As a young man, Avelino dreamed of becoming a priest, but he also longed to one day have a family of his own.

That same year, Avelino entered the United States Army and was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. After completing his military service, he moved to Los Angeles, bringing with him his lifelong love of the Dodgers. There, in 1968, he met the love of his life, Elena. They married just two months later and began the family Avelino had always dreamed of.

Avelino devoted much of his life to public service and law enforcement, first in Los Angeles and later in El Paso, Texas, where he retired from the City of El Paso in 2003.

Above all, Avelino was a man of deep faith, love, generosity, and humor. He loved his family, the saints, religious movies, the Dodgers, and a good comedy. He often said that if he ever won the lottery, he would buy everyone in his family a house.

Avelino may not have possessed great material wealth, but he gave abundantly what mattered most: love, laughter, kindness, and faith.

Avelino Jose Torres Jr.

Avelino Torres nació el 27 de febrero de 1941 en Manhattan, Nueva York, hijo de Angela Torres, de Caibarién, Cuba, y Avelino Torres Miranda, de Aguada, Puerto Rico.

Junto a su hermano Mike, pasó parte de su niñez en el Hogar Católico St. Agnes para Niños en Sparkill, Nueva York, donde fortaleció la profunda fe católica que lo acompañaría toda su vida. Se graduó del Colegio San Carlos en Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, en 1963. De joven soñó con ser sacerdote, aunque también deseaba algún día formar una familia.

Ese mismo año ingresó al Ejército de los Estados Unidos y fue destinado a Stuttgart, Alemania. Al terminar su servicio militar, se mudó a Los Ángeles, donde llevó consigo su amor por los Dodgers. Allí conoció en 1968 al amor de su vida, Elena; se casaron dos meses después y formaron la familia que Avelino tanto había deseado.

Avelino dedicó gran parte de su vida al servicio público y las fuerzas del orden, primero en Los Ángeles y posteriormente en El Paso, Texas, donde se jubiló de la Ciudad de El Paso en 2003.

Sobre todo, Avelino fue un hombre de profunda fe, amor, generosidad y buen humor. Amaba a su familia, a los santos, las películas religiosas, los Dodgers y una buena comedia. Siempre decía que, si algún día ganaba la lotería, compraría una casa para cada miembro de su familia.

Quizás no tuvo grandes riquezas materiales, pero dio abundantemente lo que verdaderamente tenía valor: amor, risas, bondad y fe.
